The Scary Flight Attendant…and What We Learned Together

As you may know, I am a professional speaker. Each year I travel nationally and abroad and speak about 150 times. Bottom-line: I fly a lot…about 100 flights annually. So, it doesn’t take me long to size up a flight attendant’s mood. This is an important skill because the flight attendant’s mood is a good predictor of how enjoyable the flight will be.

Recently I was flying from Chicago to Nashville with an angry flight attendant. As a matter of fact, she bluntly announced, “I’m in a bad mood!”—then she commenced to live up to her billing. She was rude and didn’t even offer to help the boarding passengers. It was so obvious that the pilot was covering for her by greeting the passengers by on his own.

As she was slamming the 
compartment doors just before
 takeoff, I summoned the courage
 to walk up front, tap her on the
 shoulder and say, “I can see 
you’re having a tough day. For
 whatever it’s worth, I just want you to know that I care for you.”

She seemed to ignore me. So feeling a bit stupid, I sat back down. But apparently my comment had sunk in.

As we were taking off, she sat in her jump seat facing me on the front row and began to cry, confessing, “I am having such a problem with my anger.”

That got us talking. I told her it was okay.

“No, it isn’t okay,” she replied.

I clarified, saying, “Well, I can certainly identify with how you’re feeling. There have been a lot of times when I’ve done the same — and have been very disappointed in my wife’s husband afterward.”

With the tension diffused, she said, “You must think I’m crazy.”

“No,” I replied, “I think you’re struggling.”

Later during the flight, she was like a different person. She apologized to me and couldn’t have been kinder. So, I handed her my card and invited her to call me anytime she wished.

Lest you think this is typical for me, it isn’t. Sadly, there have been similar situations when I used the other person’s behavior as an excuse to act badly myself. I’ve left those situations in worse shape than I found them. My blood pressure was up. The other person was still mad. And I’d blown my example and Christian witness.

The point is: Anger may help us see a problem — but it rarely helps us resolve it.

After all, wasn’t it Jesus who said, “Blessed are the peacemakers?”
